Day 5: Lachen – Chopta Valley – Gurudongmar Lake – Lachung

Awakening at the break of dawn, precisely at 5 am, the day commences with a delightful packed breakfast, setting the stage for an unforgettable drive to the enchanting Chopta Valley and the majestic Gurudongmar Lake, perched at an impressive altitude of 17,200 feet (70 kilometers, approximately 4-5 hours). The early morning darkness gradually gives way to the golden rays of the sun, illuminating the snow-capped peaks that glisten like mountains of gold.

The journey begins with a steep ascent from Lachen to Thangu, located at 13,000 feet (30 kilometers, taking about 2 to 2.5 hours). A brief stop at Thangu allows for stretching and acclimatization, where visitors can enjoy a taste of local hospitality with tea, bread, butter, and Maggi available for direct purchase. Here, one can gather around a traditional earthen furnace, immersing themselves in the authentic mountain lifestyle.

Continuing onward, the drive leads to the pristine and uninhabited expanse of Chopta Valley, situated at 13,500 feet (4 kilometers, approximately 30 to 45 minutes from Thangu). Many travelers, wary of the altitude, choose to limit their exploration to this valley, which lies in close proximity to Tibet and boasts a rich tapestry of alpine flora.

The route from Chopta to Gurudongmar is predominantly flat, surrounded by mountains and military outposts. This high-altitude desert is characterized by its sparse vegetation, rocky terrain, and dusty paths, making navigation challenging. The plateau’s cold and windy conditions persist year-round, and it is advisable to conserve energy, as breathing can become labored at such heights. In winter, Gurudongmar Lake is typically frozen, save for a sacred corner that remains unfrozen. The dedicated army personnel stationed here not only safeguard the border but are also ever-ready to assist those in need.

Finally, the journey concludes with a transfer to Lachung, situated at 8,000 feet (60 kilometers, approximately 3-4 hours). An overnight stay awaits at a luxurious hotel in Lachung, providing a perfect end to a day filled with breathtaking experiences.

Day 6: Lachung – Excursion to Yumthang Valley – Journey to Gangtok

Begin your day with a captivating half-day excursion to the enchanting Yumthang Valley, situated at an elevation of 11,800 feet (3,598 meters), approximately 25 kilometers away, which takes about 1.5 hours to reach. This picturesque valley, a popular destination for travelers in the region, showcases the vibrant blooms of the Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary from April to June. Surrounded by majestic, snow-capped peaks and roaming herds of yaks, Yumthang Valley truly embodies the essence of a Himalayan paradise. Additionally, the valley is renowned for its hot springs, where locals often visit to soak in the waters, believed to possess healing properties, despite their murky appearance. In the afternoon, embark on your transfer to Gangtok, located at 5,412 feet (1,650 meters), approximately 124 kilometers away, with a travel time of 5.5 to 6.5 hours. Enjoy an overnight stay at your hotel.
